Six Looks, One Stage: Ken Hung’s Shu Uemura Art of Hair Masterclass in Vancouver
Ken Hung Founder & Master Stylist · Salon Era Vancouver
On Monday, September 28, 2026, Shu Uemura Art of Hair invited Salon Era founder Ken Hung to lead its Vancouver masterclass, “Urban Zen: The Art of Hair”. The audience was not clients. It was Vancouver’s hair stylists, there to watch one master build six looks live on stage.
The brief was “where Tokyo minimalism meets zen calm”: intentional, modern and unmistakably edgy. Over the afternoon, Ken worked on six models in front of the room, explaining his approach as he went.
The Film
From the First Section to the Final Walk
A minute and a half from the afternoon: Ken cutting and styling on stage beside the Shu Uemura Art of Hair banner, the six finished looks on the runway, and the room of stylists watching it come together.
It was a look-and-learn format: the work happened in full view, so the techniques could be taken back to salons across the city.
The Brief
Tokyo Minimalism, Zen Calm, and an Edge
The masterclass was built on three ideas, and every look on stage answered all three.
Advanced technique
Precision cutting, texturizing and mixed styling, shown section by section so the room could follow every decision.
Wearable avant-garde
Artistic, tactile looks built from braids, waves and twists: editorial on stage, but made of techniques that translate to everyday hair.
Effortless finishing
Sculpt, hydrate, high shine: each look finished with Shu Uemura Art of Hair’s styling range.
On Stage
Six Models, One Afternoon
The stylists in the audience saw the parts a finished photo never shows: where the first section goes, how the weight is balanced before the detail work, and when to stop.
The looks moved from sharp, precise lines to long, glossy waves and sculpted, avant-garde shapes, all finished with Shu Uemura Art of Hair products.
Why It Matters
When a Brand Asks a Stylist to Teach
Shu Uemura Art of Hair is the Japanese professional line Salon Era already uses every day, and Ken is a Canada winner of its Gallery of Style competition. Being invited back to teach other stylists is a different kind of recognition: the brand trusts him to show its products, and its standards, to the professionals who use them.
Teaching also keeps the work honest. A technique you have to explain to a room of experts, step by step, is a technique you have thought through. That is the same care that goes into every appointment at the salon.
